Hello All-
I have doing my homework on this forum for quite sometime, and your tutorials, suggestions and input has been amazing on other threads. So in preparation for an upcoming trip, I decided it was time to sew.
For the hammock, I basically copied verbatim the Diygearsupply Double layer 1.1 hammock. Scott was a huge help and even responded to my emails very quickly about how he made it. The only mod I made was not putting the triangle on the head end. I added a full length #3 zipper and it can roll all the way up in the bishop bag. I made DIY Dynaglide whoopies and purchased the Dutch hooks to attach to my suspension. The lay is super comfortable and the bugnet turned out well after some tinkering to get it snug. My fiance got to read a book while I fished and and fell asleep in it, so it must be comfortable.
I have been wondering if I should remove 1 layer to make it a single 1.1 hammock to save weight. I am 6ft and weight 170 lbs. Would this make the hammock more/less comfortable? Would you all advise that? Also, I am having trouble with the sides folding in on my face a little. Any suggestions how to alleviate that?
My second project was to make an underquilt. I purchase some 1.1 from ripstopbytheroll and the Apex 5 from Thru-Hiker. I followed this tutorial here https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...ht=Climashield
I made it 70" by 42". I wanted to keep me warm and utilize a full length quilt. The inside out method turned out great. Sewing the 1.1 together first, then sewing the perimeter with the Apex really helped. I left about a 10" gap, then flipped it right side out, then finished the hem. I didn't add full length channels since it is a full length quilt and I didn't need it to slide. I made channels for the ends out of scrap 1.1, added the shock cord and locks. I really was toasty while I tested it out. The low got into the low 40's and my backside was plenty warm with just some jeans on.
All in all, I couldn't be happier. My only last piece is the tarp. I cant decide if I should just sew a silnylon small tarp or purchase a small/micro one. Living in sunny So Cal, we really don't get much rain, so I wanted to get the smallest lightweight tarp that I could find.
