    DIY Bugnet color - suggestions?

Ripstopbytheroll.com has several different colors of 0.75 noseeum netting fabric for sale.

I've done a forum search and web searches but can't find any info about why one color is more effective than any other.

Does anyone have any practical experience with different colors being more effective? Is it just personal preference?

    Thanks folks.

I have tried a few different colors and seems to me the biggest difference
is the black is easiest for me to see through. The lighter colors may be better
for baffles on quilts made with really light colored fabrics, but I don't see that
    as necessary.Hope this helps.

Light colors are worse for netting on a hammock (tent, shelter, etc) because it's harder to see out from inside.

That being said, I really like the OD green

by affective, do you mean at keeping bugs out? ha...

I second hk2001, when you are looking through lot's of little holes, it will be more transparent to you if it is dark, than if lighter. This is due mostly to the environment you will be set up in. I would bet that most would be setting up under tree's and where there is tree's you typically have less light and darker environment (browns, greens, blacks, etc). So the closer the shade of your netting to your surroundings the less your brain tends to focus on the noseeum itself and more on seeing through it.

Case in point, where darker isn't always better. If you were to set up in winter time where almost everything is white, the black noseeum would add a grey tint versus a white mess would be virtually invisible. But then, who would be using noseeum in the winter? So to me in most cases a darker noseeum mesh will be the most transparent mesh you can go with. Just my 2 cents with no science to back it up.

Light scatters of off the netting making it harder to see through. More light is reflected off of lighter colors so they are harder to see through than darker colors. All of them are harder to see through in bright light than in dim light.

I would think that a white net on a sunny winter day with snow cover reflecting additional light to the netting would be the worst case scenario.

I am with everyone else on this black or od green are most likely the best for looking thru, like Hk, the od green is my favorite, as far as the bugs go, treat with the stuff that Dutch has on his site for gear treating and you should be ok.

i prefer the black as well. I have a question to add to this thread though. I like the feel of the ENO bug net I have, it seems softer then the no see um I purchased from quest outfitters. Does anyone know where I can get softer bug netting, or does eno launder theirs or do something to make it softer.

the ripstopbytheroll netting is the best iv'e ever seen- it's stiff enough to hold a crease when hemming without pins, even tho its only .75 p/2yd. it feels very thick and tough. more abrasion resistant to. you won't be dissapointed! i got mine in black so i can see out of it well.
