    Why not sleeping bags?

I didn't know whether to put this in the bottom-insulation or top-insulation subforum... so anyway...

The argument I heard against this is that the sleeping bag gets compressed when it's in a hammock and therefore doesn't work, doesn't retain heat.

But doesn't the sleeping bag get compressed when it's, you know, on the ground, in a tent? And your body is pressing it into the ground? I don't understand how that logic makes any sense. Especially in a bridge style hammock where it's even flatter and more ground-like and so there are supposedly less "pressure points".

If anyone could explain this to me I would be grateful. Thank you.

In a hammock you have air going under you, which robs you of even more heat.

Most people use a pad on the ground and that serves as the insulation. Suspended in the air, a hammock also has convective heat loss to the air that a ground dweller does not have.

Sleeping bags work just fine in a hammock. You will still need under insulation...underquilt, or pad. Just as you still need under insulation when on the ground (pad). There's no effective difference between ground sleeping and hammock camping in that regard...you still will need under insulation, unless the temps are relatively high at night. Then, hammock camping has an edge and its not required...but that has nothing to do with using a sleeping bag vs a topquilt.

The only other real 'issue' with a sleeping bag in a hammock is that it can be a bit more problematical to get in/out of while swaying in a hammock. Much easier on solid ground.

But...IMHO, a sleeping bag still retains a bit more warmth over a TQ/UQ solution because you lose less heat to drafts when the TQ shifts and air gets in. Sleeping bags don't have this problem since they wrap around you.

Use whichever works best for you.

I fully agree - if you have a sleeping bag you can certainly use it in a hammock (I do and a sb is my preference).

I think a lot of the sleeping bag vs TQ depends on how you are using it as well as personal preference. As others state above, some hammockers, may like the convenience of getting in and out of it vs a sleeping bag. Backpackers may also like the convenience of a TQ in a hammock in addition to the weight savings most quilts provide vs a sleeping bag that have full length zippers, hoods, and as you correctly point out, material and fill that may not help to insulate because it is compressed and underneath you. Some ultralighters who have never even been in a hammock prefer it solely for the weight savings. I love top quilts.

There was this recent post that seems to have solved it pretty well.

Ha! My poor attempt at being sly. I make TQs that address this.

That thread you posted is a pretty wild idea though, I like it as well!

I have been sleeping on the ground with a quilt for the last several years.. Ground or hammock, I will never use another mummy bag.
