Typically used for wire rope. Most likely unnecessary, but it won't hurt anything. Looks cool.

Nice job on the tight splice. Depending on what you are hooking it on, this will keep the amsteel from being cut. It definitely has its uses.

I believe the question of "why?" was an earnest one. I don't see any benefit for this design in the way I deploy my set-up. Have you had wear issues that this would prevent or just looking for a different way?

Why not?? Completely unnecessary, serves no purpose in hanging a hammock, likely to cause more problems than could ever be solved. Looks to me like a solution to a nonexistent problem.
