Kind of new to the forum here. I've done some prowling and gleaned some good info but figured it was time to poke my head out and contribute to this community. I've been doing the hammock thing for a while now, bought an ENO that quickly made its way back to the store. Since then I've been building and designing my own. There's a couple pictures in my gallery, the tarps were purchased, hammocks and UQ's are DIY.
We do a lot of higher elevation backpacking here (read: we huff and puff on the hill climbs, not much O2 at 9700 feet) so I originally was interested in hammocks for sleep comfort and reducing pack weight from my traditional tent setup. We don't have too many issues in the Frank Church, the Sawtooths, or the White Clouds with overused camp areas (2.5 million acres of wilderness to play in) but I really liked the idea of lessening my impact, as well as the ease of finding a suitable place to set up, and who can argue with the cool factor of making your own gear? I had some initial concerns with tarp coverage and UQ warmth, thunderstorms are common in the summer up there, as well as frost in the morning, but I've gotten through that with a little practice.
For my first contribution, I can definitively say, thanks to a poor weather report and my tendency to push it a little bit, that 6oz Climashield is NOT sufficient for an UQ at 14 degrees (weatherman said 34 before that overnight trip) but it's decent at 30.
