    hungry figure 9 biners..

they ate the sheath to the stock ropes on my Hennessy hammock. Bad biners!

so, is a frayed sheath that big a deal here, or am I going to have to fix it? The core seems just fine, only the sheath is somewhat frayed...

Those Figure 9s are probably rated for 150 lbs. and aren't safe for hanging anyway.

no, no - I would never have used one of those. The ones I have are rated for 400 lbs, but their teeth are just too sharp for the rope on the HH...

I used those for one season many years back but after being on this site for a while I swaped out the stock HH lines for whoopies and longer tree straps before replacing the hammock all together with another vendor that made larger hammys. Whoopies with toggles saves a ton of weight check it out.

If they ate the sheath, what do you think they're going to do to the core? Isn't one purpose of the sheath to protect the core?

I would like to know where you found your 400# rated figure 9, I haven't seen any after many searches.

Even Figure 9s rated to 400 lbs. (which I've also never seen) probably don't provide an adequate safety ratio. Most hangers are using suspensions components with a minimum 1,000 breaking strength.

these things came from a home improvement store - used mostly for hoisting stuff, I reckon... The core looks good, though, and the sheath isn't completely destroyed, just frayed a bit.

I wonder why a 1000# load limit would be necessary. I'm not going to be doing 1 1/2 gainers with a twist in the thing! What am I missing?

I'll be going to whoopie slings and figuring it out from there - I've seen the toggle thing on Shug Emery's vids, might go that route.

this should demonstrate why you don't hang from things rated at less than 1000. lbs. just enter your hang data. http://theultimatehang.com/hammock-hang-calculator/
