There are lots of positions possible in a traditional gathered-end hammock. check out this video showing off a few of them

Overall I love the idea of being off the ground and having my body cradled. The way you guys are making it sound, I should throw my Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress in the trash. :-)

I had my back fused from T12 to L2 in 1994 after I was hit on my bike (complete burst fracture of the L1)...joined the infantry in 1996... Used a very basic net hammock towards the end before I got out in 2003...I only recently started using one for canoe tripping but I can honestly say that despite my previous injury and fused spine I have never once experienced lower back pain in a hammock...I actually sleep far better in it than I do in bed....but a night in bed with my wife trumps comfort any day

I use a knee pillow under my legs. Sleep diagonally for most instances but find a straight position perfect for allergies. I sleep in a hammock every night. My back has never been better! It is so versatile people send thousands on beds that you can change positions. Mine cast $50:-)

Sounds like the sleeping position on a hammock is going to be ideal for me... I spent thousands on my bed and it is flat. :-(

Like what is depicted in my avatar.

The only issue I've experienced sleeping on my back in a hammock is when my bladder gets full, my kidneys get kind of sensitive. Other than that, no other issues and I'm one who can't sleep on my back in a bed because of resulting back pain/ache.
