a little help deciding.. hennessy supershelter, or another 3 season.

I just recently bought the Hennessy Expedition Asym Zip.. and looking for a little extra warmth if needed.

Reviews are mixed on the hennessy supershelter but if it keeps me warmer (or drier) during spring/summer/fall
I'm happy.. I also thought I could suppliment a space/mylar/survival blanket between the pad and the underquilt..

This is my first season/year, so I'm being thorough and need a little push. are there other systems, without spending a 2-3 hundred on an underquilt alone?

BillyBob58 is a SuperShelter enthusiast so I'm sure he'll be along shortly. Personally, I can't see spending $140 for a SuperShelter when you could spend $200 and have a 20* HG Phoenix UQ that will serve you much better.

An AHE New River underquilt (this is a full-length synthetic uq) would cost you $155 and likely provide a bit more warmth. I have never used a SuperShelter, so cannot really say how good it is, but I'm with SilvrSurfr on this: I would rather spend a bit more and get a down underquilt. If you are willing to live with a pad for the summer, you could wait for the next Hammock Gear sale, and pick up a down uq with a discount.

Hi I have a expidition with the SS and it's works good for me down to about 40 degrees. For the money the size and weight it serves it's purpose. If you think you want it a little warmer you can slide a poncho liner between the SS and the hammock. If you can find one used at a good price try it for the season and if you want to go to a underquilt just sell it and roll that cash towards a underquilt. hope that helps.

I agree with you completely. We have the Expedition and it is simple to place it.

I didn't know exactly what to do so I found the average temperature in my area for spring and
fall months.. Browsing the reviews on the new river and phoenix 40 right now.. since we do not
drop below 40*/5c on average anything over 200$ is probably would be overkill for the time being.....
    but I could be wrong?!

The SS is good for 3 seasons, especially in very wet conditions. Plus you have the option
of using different insulation in it. If hard pressed you can stuff natural insulating materials in it.

I used a SS for a while with explorer zip. Coldest I got was about 30 degrees and it kept me plenty warm (with my Nemo sleeping bag as a top quilt) I found to be a bit of a pain to set up and have since bought a HG Incubator, which I love. I haven't used it as much as I used my SS but so far I like it better...time will tell. I'm keeping my SS for now. My son will probably use it in the future. The only criticism I have of the SS is it takes a bit longer to set up...but it does work well..
