    Cam Buckles ??

I can get cam buckles in 1.5" and Polyester seatbelt webbing in 1.5"
I have not seen cam buckles mentioned in this forum, is there any reason not to use them ? will the "teeth" cut into the polyester webbing and "ruin" it ?

    Thanks,

For one thing they are heavy. For another ring buckles/cinch buckles seem to be as effective without the teeth and without the weight. I don't think _I_ (personal statement) would trust the nylon cam buckles that you sometimes find on lightweight gear straps.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

The ones I am looking at are metal 1.5" cam buckles rated at 1200#
I kayak camp no back packing, so I am not a "gram-er" per say.

They should hold the webbing just fine. But you need to watch the webbing for abrasion from the teeth.

If you haven't purchased them yet, maybe it's worth the effort to use a buckle or ring-type that won't have that possibility. But if you have them already, just watch them over time to see how it goes. Report back if it's a problem, so that you share the info with others.

    War-B-Guy,
What type of webbing are you using, I have 1" polyester and there is no way I am tying a hitch in it after the buckle, it is just to stiff.
Currently I have 1" poly and 1" metal cinch buckles, but I do not trust the buckles, one slipped on me. I tried tying a hitch in it after the buckle was adjusted, but it was to stiff.
That is why I am looking at the 1.5 with cam buckles.

Cam buckles - been there, done that.

    Not recommended.

    Weight - heaviest option around.

Wear - the teeth of the buckle have to sharp and pointed to prevent slipping. The sharper and more pointed, the greater the wear and tearing of the webbing.
Those who sacrifice freedom for safety, have neither.

I have 15 to 20 foot 1 inch poly straps that I use in canoes with cam buckles to tie in gear. I lay them on the bottom of the canoe and when loaded bring them up over the top through the cam and tighten them down hard. Using two per canoe and well placed, I have rolled canoes over in the river and never lost gear. I also use them to strap canoes to my trailer and vehicles.

I use them when I want to reduce with the cam buckle around the tree and then run the free end through a cinch buckle. I do back it up with a slippery half hitch. I get the straps from North West River Supply in Moscow, Idaho.

They also sell the strapping material (rated at 1750 lbs.) and cinch buckles seperately if you want to customize. I have used these with great success. I have not used the cam buckles at the business end of the hammock though, simply where the strap goes around the tree. The business end of the hammock is a cinch buckle.

I like not having to carry additional straps for the hammock.
