My Geodesic Dome @ Wakarusa Music Festival

Thought you all would be interested in seeing my album of the dome I built for hammocking Wakarusa. It was a huge hit!

Max hammock count got up to 26, with some people hanging out on top of the dome. Did have some structural issues & had to limit climbing/# of hammocks. Would be happy to answer any questions

    Way too much fun!

    Where were the issues?
I see a bent rail, maybe from someone standing on it, but did any of the joints/flattened ends go weak?

So the conduit doesn't hold weight very well in the middle of the bars, so climbing people need to stand on the corners - but its impossible to tell that to everyone. So we had some bent from people climbing around/standing in the middle of bars. So at a couple points, I would have a corner 'pop' in. Kinda scared some people but nobody got hurt or anything. I had to replace 2 bars through the weekend, but once I figured out what the dome could take, I instituted a hammock limit, & made sure nobody climbed except for hanging a hammock & getting in/out of the hammock.

While I was gone Friday night, about 10 people got on top of the dome & sat on the tarp between bars, kind of like a triangle hammock lol. I'm really glad the tarp held...would hate to have some injuries on my hands.

Yeah we had a ton of people packed under there when it rained on Sunday - I had originally had the 30'x30' tarp folded into a triangle so there was more of a view - when I got to the dome that morning there were a bunch of people under it, and the people toward the edges of the tarp were getting rained on. So I recruited 3 people to help me cut the twine holding the triangle together, spread out the tarp, & re-tie. I got a standing ovation from everyone.

I also had a bunch of people cheering at me & saying thanks whenever I had to leave the festival sunday night - I was so happy to get to share this with everyone and see it get so much use.

Just the conduit was about $650 or so. nuts & bolts maybe $50-$70 I forget. Tarp was a little over $100. Had to buy like 4 cutting wheels, a couple drill bits, and some paint for color coding as well. Maybe 50-60 hours of labor.

That's absolutely fantastic awesome job. Did they let you build that near the stage/vendor area? If so very cool. Will you be at lockn' music festival in VA. I hope so I'll be their and looking for a place to hang
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.
