    Advice please.

    Hey there!

Getting ready to make an order for my first DIY hammock. I'm about 5'9" and 200 lbs. Should I go with a 10 of 11 foot hammock? Also, what weight ripstop would be best and should it be single or double layer? Just want some advice from those in the know before I spend the money on fabric only to find out I should have done something else.

    Appreciate the help everyone!

Personally, I am 6'1" and 200, I just finished making a Single layer DiY hammock with the argon 1.6 that dutch sells; I'd say use that as it is a breeze to worth with and amazingly comfortable. I bought 4 yards and the finished ~11'8" is super comfy and still only 347 grams (12.24 ounces) in a heavy duty stuffsack. Dutch says it can comfortably support up to 250lbs.

You should make the 11' first then if you don't like it cut a foot off.

Yes always start big because you can cut to get small, but not the reverse.

    That's a good idea!

Other than using a pad or for holding more weight, is there a reason for double layer?

I was thinking about using the 1.8oz/yd˛ (40d) Ripstop Nylon. 64″ wide. ACU Camouflage from DIY gear supply. Anyone ever used it? SL or DL?

mosquitos may be an issue but that depends on how tight the weave of the fabric is and overall quality. Other lighter methods to keep pad from shifting around as well. If you use a Fronkey bugnet sock mosquitos are less of a problem. I like single layer in hot weather because they breath better. You might be able to add another layer later if you change your mind.
Only advantage I can think of "off hand" is if you rip a hole it may only be in one layer. But always have a yard or two of duct tape wrapped around a straw or water bottle etc. Tenacious tape is also good. BTW never let people with knives and other sharp objects on/in their pants sit in your hammock to "try it out". A bad experience.

I agree with what's been said. Dutch's ARGON 1.6 and good idea to make it 11' then shorten it if that's too long. The general rule that I've heard tossed around is 4 feet longer than you are, so in that case 10' would probably do it but maybe you'll like the extra length. I think my hammock is a tad too long for me. I'm 5'6" and it's just under 11'. I find that if I don't hang the head end a lot lower then I slide down too far towards the middle. No experience with 1.8, but I'm sure that would work also and if it's wider more length is good.
