Some planning, a shop vac, and some patience = 2 lbs of down

Finally found a high quality down comforter at my local Savers store (in support of the Disabled American Veterans). I used the no-seum shop-vac method to harvest.

Almost 2 lbs of high quality down for $7.

    Worth the effort.

No link really - although some googling would get you some more details.

My shop vac has two rigid extensions for the hose. I cleaned the extension in the shop sink and dried them. I then took a section of no-see-um and trapped it in between the two sections (they press-fit together). Suck up the down until the vacuum looses suction. Remove the extensions from the hose and then 'trumpet' the plug of down into whatever receptacle you have set up. (Blow from the side that was attached from the hose if this is not obvious)

    Some tips:

    * I sewed up a big bag of ripstop with long neck with an opening just bigger than the vac extensions....much easier to blow the down into that instead of a big open hole where down could shoot back out. Worked great! Ideally, you could just place the down into whatever item you are making.
    * Aim your vac's exhaust port away from your work area.
    * I did this project in the garage

    Hope this helps

I had seen a video of somebody using a similar method, to fill a quilt. Using a scale to measure down amounts for stuffing...if I happen across it, I'll post. It may be saved on my computer at home.

I should add that I have a really big shop vac with a large diameter hose. This helps a slow process be a little faster. I like the idea of taring the scale with the hose attachments...then measuring the down into the quilt. I'll try that in the near future.

I think what he did was put a paper bag on the scale, tare it out, then added the down by hand until it was at the proper weight per baffle, then used the vac to suck it out of the bag and fill the baffle. I'll search out the video when I get home.

Here's the basics. But I know there's a video somewhere.

Is not effective on the image. My experience is:
changing Blower side off vacuum as extension tube
and it's like a Hurikan to fill - no blockade with the daune.

    down stuffing how to video
