    Just Curious

I live in the South and the temps get down maybe to the low 70's during the evening. For those of you who live down here, do you feel the need for any kind of light blanket or anything with these temps?

I just got my first hammock this Christmas and do mostly backpacking so I wasn't sure what I should pack if anything. My 30 degree top quilt definitely would seem like overkill.

An army poncho liner is light enough and works well. The differential is what makes the difference - with the humidity that we'uns suffer, and 95 degree days, 70 at night can feel cool.

Maybe just a sleeping bag liner. Some people need something over them to get to sleep, probably just a psychological thing. A silk SB liner would be very light and warming enough to just make up for that bit of cooling. You could also just have it covering half your body if you don't need a full covering.

I think it depends on where you hang. I like to hang in the North Georgia mountains and it can get down in the 50's during the summer months, so I generally bring a 35 degree sleeping bag. I start out on top of the bag when I first lay in the hammock and wake up with at least my lower half of my body in the bag. If I am hanging in temps where the lows average in the low 70's to upper 60's, I at least bring a poncho liner or a sleeping bag liner. I think you always need to have some cover, just in case.

I was just out in the hill country in Texas a couple of weekends ago and I used a poncho liner as my underquilt. At 70º you want something under you to avoid the Cold Butt Syndrome but will not need anything more than a sheet or liner on top of you. Much above 70º and I don't need anything below my hammock, I just sleep in a liner or with a sheet.

I usually use a windshield visor for an underpad when it is warmer and think I will be fine with that. I was just wondering what I could use as a top layer because I usually like something on me. I thought about one of those cheap fleece blankets from Wally World but they tend to pick up grass and dirt pretty easy. I was just wondering if there is anything out there I haven't seen yet.

+1 on the poncho liner. I like to have it with me in the summer even though I often don't end up even using it.
