I use a 40 degree JRB Stealth Sniveler for 3 season paired, with a 3/4 length 20 degree UQ have been into the teens comfortably. Light to med base layers, wool socks and a hat.

Most of our HF vendors are very conservative with their temp ratings. \

As long as you purchase quality, should it not suit, it will resale right here on HF easily.

Like I said at the point I really don't see myself doing any winter camping but will also be going further north in the fall, mid September. I don't want to be too hot for this trip. Should I just get a 50 and a 20?
You could certainly invest in two quilts but it is not needed unless you just want to get your pack weight down for summer. In warmer weather you just cover up as needed with your TQ. As the temp gets colder you cover up more until your completely covered. You certainly can use a 20* or 30* in much warmer weather but you can't really use a 50* in 25* weather and be comfortable without additional layering.

This is a good weather resource and I found it here.....
Good luck with your search !

edit: BTW....after basically asking the same questions as your asking I went with a custom 30 from Mid-Atlantic Mountain Works for 3 seasons....

It would be nice to have a summer Quilt (50) but I'm getting a 0 degree soon as well for winter so I'm saving up for that right now.

The 30 will serve me well till then.

Your "under" insulation will factor into this equation as well.

You basically cant go wrong if you go with a cottage vendor , do some research and ask some questions.

    Hi Vwpimpin,

First let me make sure we clear up that...700 and 850 are not materials..that is in reference to the down fill power.

Secondly, in reference to which TQ would be suitable for temp ratings...after reading your post...it seems IMO that the 30* might be your best option...it will keep you warm when needed and if it gets to warm you can always vent or push the quilt to the side to stay cooler.

In all actuality...I suppose you could do the same thing with a 20*....just keep in mind if weight is an issue the 20* will be a tad bit heavier.

    Oh decisions decisions...lol

    I hope this helps,
    Missy

I was in the daks last july backpacking in the high peaks. got down to just above 50 at night after being hot during the day. 40's at night wouldn't be an oddity anytime in july and august.

Thanks everyone. I just got off the phone with undergroundquilts and they were so helpful. I went with the flight jacket 30 degree. Just placed my order, psyched!
