diy troubleshooting - New member *and* new to hanging

Hi everyone, nice place you've got here!

The main question is, will a ripstop poly w/ the same dimensions hang differently (feel tighter mainly) than one of poly taffeta?

Last week I got my wife a Eno DN. We both really like it and as I'm sort of a hacker I decided to try my hand at making one.

    Borrowed thread injector,
    60"x120" ripstop poly,
    poly outdoor thread,
black diamond hotwire quickdraw on sale for $10 (biners dont match but oh well)!,
    and climbing rope

All supplies in hand I hemmed the sides and ends, then triple stitched the channels at about 6".

I put it together and hung it last night. I was only moderately disappointed. It is serviceable. I tried it at multiple hangles and laying positions, even at it's best the sides were fairly floppy and the center fairly tight. The main construction difference, other than overall dimensions, that I noticed between mine and the Eno was the channel size. Mine at 6" was much larger than the eno at 1.5ish". Could that be a factor?

I was hoping it'd feel similar to my Eno double...If I can't get it to hang right I'm going to try another one w/ the exact dimensions of the Eno DN using taffeta.

It sounds like your finished length is about 9 feet. While some people are OK with that, the most popular lengths are 10' - 11'. I would bet that it's the length that is the blame for your disappointment.

The dn is short but pretty wide. The fabric has a bit more stretch than the taffeta you are using. At the very least your DIY should be 9.5 ft but over 10 is better. You will end up with some floppy sides but even the eno has that. The length of your project is what going to make yours more comfy.

Well ladies and gents, thanks for the tips. Tonight I added a triple stitched extension onto the end of my diy. Those extra 3 feet were the trick indeed.

This 12'x60" lays great and is much more forgiving in regards to hangle. You need a good amount of room to hang a 12 footer and it's not as soft as taffeta eno dnot but it's pretty good.

In all it owes me about $40 worth of naps. Not bad since the double nest owes 90, straps included.

Next go around try the taffeta since I'm not to concerned with weight. I'll also try the 120x80 spec of the eno dn. But first, I'll enjoy some good lays in the ones I've got!

    Thanks again.

Tame those floppy sides with a simple Knotty Mod. I use two on my 11' WW. Makes for a very nice foot box too!
