Idea for 4 Season Extreme Weather tarp shelter Mod

Hi guys. Bored at work today thinking about extreme weather mods for hammocks. I had an idea. What if you had a tarp that had grooves or slots near the top inside of the tarp that sticks/stakes could be slid into and secured then stuck in the ground. I Assume that in severe weather the tarp would be lower to the ground, allowing smaller lighter poles/limbs to be driven into the ground at an angle with the tarp. If it could work it would strengthen the hammock tarp shelter against wind significantly.

I would think that having something rigid incorporated into the tarp would (a) increase the likelihood of damage to the tarp under severe conditions and (b) create an object that could be thrown into the occupant of the hammock. Now, a long flexible pole (like a dome tent pole) that creates a 'rib' of sorts from one side to the other might be an option. I just wouldn't want to use sticks that only went part-way up the hammock. I like my tarps too much.

For me, severe winds mean better site location. It's rare that I can't find a somewhat sheltered place to hang if Mama Nature throws one of her fits.

I was thinking about driving the limbs a few good inches into the ground. But yea something like you described, like tent poles would seem better, maybe a piece of curved tent pole with a stake on one end for staking it in the ground inside the tarp.

Yea i would assume as well you would have to have a stronger fabric for this than the usual fabrics. One with high tear resistance.

Well, it's an old saying here on hammock forums; "try it and let us know how it works."

    Don't be scared!

Just order some material and start making stuff sacks (really easy). Once you've got those mastered it's only a matter of aesthetics. I think Just Jeff said it best one time and I'm paraphrasing: "My stuff works. It may not be the best looking upon a close inspection, but if someone wants to start nit-picking my sewing skills...I don't want to camp with them anyway." It always makes me feel better to remember that when I'm looking at one of my completed projects.

Isn't there a pic of something like that in one of the galleries? I couldn't find it offhand, but I like the idea and will give it a go in a week or two after I do some repairs on the 'gear' machine. I'm thinking you could use plastic wire nuts as receivers for the rib ends.
