What is the optimal length of a whoopie sling?
I see 6 ft and 5 ft. Are there others? What is best?
Sorry if this has been answered in the WS sticky, but there are just too many posts to look through.
Thanks

Six feet is pretty common. Depends on how long you want your overall suspension which in turn is dependent on the woods you're hanging in. Bigger more far apart trees require additional suspension length.
Don't let life get in the way of living.
With the average lenght of hammock, and the optimum suspension angles taken into account...which dictate that trees that are about 15-20 feet apart being the best distance to work with a 5-6 foot suspsnsion on either side of the hammock is best. There have been places produce longer whoopies but there really is no good reason to. You just end up with excess slings lenght for no increase in functionality. While you could hand from trees that are 30 feet aprart there is no good reason to, to get a good hang angle you would need an 8 foot ladder in your pack to make a longer span work.

Okay, thanks. I will go with 6.
I use 3 full arm span lengths when pulling off the spool, seems to make a good whoopie.
and for that matter 3/4 an arm span makes a good continuous loop
In the rare occasion that you may need a W.S. longer than 6' you could make 2 dog bones about 3' long and Larks head them in as extentions if necessary. I.e. a 4' length of Amsteel with locked Brummel loop on both ends to make the extra long "dogbone" these and shorter "dogbones" are useful for many things.
Now to figure out what a locked Brummel Loop is..........
Thanks everyone.....I always receive so many great answers. I love HF!

Good luck! It's easier than it looks..
I tend to prefer 8' whoopie sling. It seems I often find myself camping in places where the good trees are farther apart than optimum. I had been using dog bone extensions attached with soft shackles without problem, but it happens so often for me that I just ended up making longer whoopies.
It also seems that the standard 6' tree straps are too short for the tress I come across so I also use 8' tree straps, and even they are often too short and so have to use extensions.
These are just the standard oak trees around here
I can't imaging hanging from some of the redwoods out west:-)
