Down under quilt and top quilt ideas

I found a great sale on down duvets (quilts) for CHEAP. Any ideas on if I took one apart and used that to fill a down under quilt and a top quilt if that would work?

Do I need to use coated nylon on both the under and the top quilt?

Unless you're paying a LOT for those quilts, they'll mostly be filled with feathers, not down. And I don't think you want to try sorting out the down - I thought about that and was discouraged

You want DWR for both sides of the shell with down, and I'd look for some that says "downproof".

The coated nylon, DWR, is what makes the nylon downproof. The down will go through uncoated. Just do not use sil. Your body is still going to give off mosture while you sleep that needs to pass through the quilt.

Careful on the duvets. Make sure they are 100% down, or close to it. Most are only 10 or 20% down and the rest feathers. I lot heavier for the loft.

I'd suggest Climashield XP or Polarguard 3D for a quilt - that's what continuous filament insulation like these is meant for. But if you can get Primaloft locally, you can probably save a good bit on shipping.

Quilts like that may be about 550 fp. Or lower if it has more feathers. Either way, it'll work for a prototype - it'll just be heavier than 800fp. But at least this way you'll have the prototype made, so later on you can just rip one seam and replace the down with higher quality stuff.

Or check the price of floor down at Feathered Friends.
