I did a little mod to the end of my straps on my speer diy hammock. I folded the end over, leaving a small loop, and sewed it to itself (sorry, no pictures at this time--maybe this weekend?) I used the sewing machine to sew the webbing together, and then used heavy duty upholstry thread to handsew the edges to make it stronger. On the last trip I took, one of the trees was bigger in diameter than I usually use. To go all around it 4 or 5 times to make a speer knot would have taken too much strap and messed up the hammock set up. So, I went around the tree 1 .5 times, and put a piece of rope through the end loop, and finished the knot using the rope anchored to another tree. The webbing supports the hammock and the rope keeps the webbing from slipping. It worked really well: sort of a cross between a hennasy tree hugger and a standard speer webbing knot. It gave me the flexibility to use a really cool campsite that wouldnt have worked otherwise. Has any one else used somthing like this?:
