    Misting on my SpinnUL tarp!?!

Last trip I experienced some light misting at times through my spinn MacCat tarp. I've had the tarp over 5 years with no problems at all and it's been used a lot. I'm wondering if I just need to apply a light DWR? Or something else?

It was raining very hard when I experienced this, but I've had similar downpours with no misting.

I have a mat cat spin ultralight tarp about 7 years old. It's the big ultra size and I have never experienced any misting. And it rained hard here in Florida.

My theory is that summer thunderstorms bring cold water but the air under the tarp is hot. This causes condensation on the under side of the tarp from that warm air touching the cooled down material of the tarp. Then the force of the drops of water dislodge that condensation which we call misting.

Think maybe I should hit it with DWR and see if that fixes it?

    Probably condensation not misting.

I have seen this effect with Spinnaker, Cuben, Silnylon, as well as other materials.
DWR will not fix the condensation on the underside of your tarp.

As MAD777 stated, cold rain chills the tarp, humid air condenses on the underside of the tarp, rain striking the tarp shakes this condensation off in the form of a light spray.

I concur with the condensation theory.

Yeppers,,from the 100% humidity of the rain,,and the underneath of the tarp condensing water vapor,,you get mist in a good downpour of a rain as the rain hits the tarp,,doesn't happen often but have had it happen.

This reminds me of a certain backpacker that I know who keeps replacing his expensive gear because of what he calls leaks.
Going by his description, it always sounds like normal condensation.

When people explain that it is just condensation, he says, "I don't care what you call it, I don't want anything that leaks".

And so he always has lots of nice gear for sale for cheap, but only if you can deal with the fact that the gear leaks:-)

What do you guys do about the condensation? Just accept it? Or is there a solution or a way to lessen mist?

Don't camp when it is hot and going to rain?

Seriously, it is physics. Can't change physics. It is just a bit of mist - not a downpour.
