If it is deflecting that much putting a 4x4 in the center may make it wobbly (I would think).

I have a set of steel joints for a hammock stand I bought long ago and the only reason Im not using them now is because we have trees at our current location. Anyways, this is from www.hangouts.com. check out the steel joints. Yes, they are more expensive than the ones you guys are talking about- but you don't have to deal with the 4x4 not exactly fitting in the stand and using shims.
The steel that attaches to the legs are 18", the part that goes up are also 18" and welded at an 110 degree angle. The part for attaching the 4x4 under the hammock is 12" long. 4x4s need to be rounded over where the steel attaches
My thoughts are that this is something simple enough that anyone who has welding expertise can make them probably for alot less.

Hi all, sorry to bump such an old thread, but does anyone know where you can buy these brackets nowadays? I can't seem to find them anywhere.
Or alternately does anyone have a set they would be willing to sell? I'm talking about the kind where you slide the 4x4s into them.
When I got mine they were on a clearance sale. I don't think they are available anymore.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.
