    At what temps?

Is there an easy way to figure out when you need UQ and TQ?

I can usually find lower limits for gear, but I'm fairly unsure at what temps you add things on.

Is it just one of those things that depends on your comfort levels or is there a general rule of thumb?

When I asked the very same question not to long ago I was told anything under 65 and you usually need something under you.
I've found that to be true.
A top quilt is a personal thing in the higher temps I think ..I have a custom 30 degree TQ from Mid Atlantic Mountain Works and last time I was out the low was 60 (with a 20 degree Hammock Gear under quilt) I had the TQ vented all the way and I was good.
    Not to hot.
some folks will use a light sheet or a poncho liner when it's very hot.
A lot is personal preference and experimentation combined.

Others will chime in I'm sure....

I always take an underquilt, and something to cover up with. Even in July and August I have been glad to have them about 3am.

It might be worth a note that I'm in a state with higher temps. My first night out started with 95* and at 3AM we hit 60* I took a regular sheet with me because I can't stand not being covered when sleeping, I didn't need it till we hit that low.

This is why I'm asking specifically about temps.

Oh wow..didn't notice where you were....haha.
i spent a few months in the Mohave and I was really surprised how cold I got at night.

not sure how similar those environments are to where you're at.

i was using a military sleep system at the time though...

one thing I did learn in the military was " better to have and not need .....than to need and not have".

granted we had trucks to haul our stuff most of the time...

Ive lightened up a lot since then though

It really can get cold at night. Winters even in the city where the concerte holds heat winters go from 70s in the day to 30s at night and when we lived way out of the city it would get into the 20s.

What do you do with the underquilt if you are not using it?
I guess what I mean, is do you attach it somehow so if it gets colder you're not unpacking and setting up gear in the middle of the night?
Or set it all up and deal with the water loss in the morning?

they attach with s-biners and shock cord to your hammock suspension so you just move it to the side out from under you .
so it's there if you need it.
if you want man search for "Shug" on YouTube and watch his videos.
most fun you'll have leaning about hammocks I guaranty it.
thats how I learned a lot of stuff initially about hammocks.....that and starting a million threads here .......asking a million questions.

Here the the first one I found about quilts....theres a bunch.

Embarrassingly enough I've watched Shug's and Grizz's videos and still am here asking all the noob questions. I absorb a little better reading.

    Thank you for the help!
