    a lighter biner - 19g

I did a search and didn't find mention of this here. I just ran across a slightly lighter carabiner than the camp nano 23. Edelrid makes a "Nineteen G" carabiner that weighs in at ~19.5g. Full rated for climbing.

Yeah, there are lighter biners that aren't climbing rated. And of course there are other options such as soft shackles and dutch clips. I just find full carabiners easier to use.

    Nice find Mad Goat!!
19.5 gm vs 23gm saves 7gm on a hammock suspension using two biners instead of toggles.

    pics, specs, measured weights

I got the carabiners yesterday. The "Edelrid 19g" carabiner is specified to weigh 19.5g. On my scale, it weighed in at 20g. The resolution of my scale is 1g, so the actual weight could be anywhere from 19.5g-20.49g.

For comparison, here are the specs, weights, and comparison picture of the 3 carabiners in my gear closet.

For hammock purposes, i see no substantive difference between the Edelrid and the CAMP biners, except for the weight and the price. The Edelrid biner is smaller and has a slightly smaller gate opening, but that doesn't matter to me at all. I hung my ridgerunner in the basement with them last night and observed no problems with them.

    "Edelrid 19g"
    major axis - 20kN
    minor axis - 7kN
    open gate - 7kN
    spec weight - 19.5g
    measured weight - 20g

    CAMP Nano 23
    major axis - 20kN
    minor axis - 7kN
    open gate - 7kN
    spec weight - 23g
    measured weight - 24g

    Mad Rock Ultra-Light Bent
    major axis - 25kN
    minor axis - 8kN
    open gate - 7kN
    spec weight - 32g
    measured weight - 34g

I hope ya'll find this information useful.

    "Edelrid 19g" - $10.95

    CAMP Nano 23 - $5.50

    Mad Rock Ultra-Light Bent $8.45

    Metolius F.S. Mini Carabiner - $6.71

I'll take the 4g penalty at half the price for the CAMP Nano's.

    gmcttr,

Really, you would spurn a 7g savings for mere money? Just think of the extra half candybar you could put in your pack and not notice a thing!

As for me, I will rejoice in my 7g lighter pack. Because 7g really matters.... really.... (or I needed another set of biners to rig up another hammock.... and splurged a little)

Edelrid vs Camp = $1.21/gram difference.

$1.21/g x 28.35 = $34.30/ounce (more or less). I've seen folks spend several hundred to save an ounce or two: this is a bargain for true ULers!

edit: No disrespect to UL. My toothbrush is cut in half, etc...

What about these "karabiners" from DD Hammocks?

    http://www.ddhammocks.com/product/superlight_karabiners

Says they weigh 8g each, are rated to 400kg (881 pounds).
