Hi everyone, I'm a new hanger in smalltown Iowa - been lurking for a few weeks but figured it's time to introduce myself. I'm married (at least until I blow all my money on gear) and we have two boys, ages 1 and 3. What turned me on to hanging? I've always been interested and a couple years ago bought a Yukon Outfitters Double on woot for $20. Never really used it, but I took it to Colorado on an elk hunt last year, which worked great for midday naps, but I shrugged off the idea of sleeping in it full time because of the cold back (plus we were hunting out of a nice base camp with cots). Well for this year's hunt (mid September), we're planning on spike camping out a few miles, and I didn't have light enough gear to do that, on the ground or in the trees. I started researching, and found a bunch of good info here (especially on how to stay warm!), so I dove in.
Right now, I've got a sewn poncho liner underquilt and a 20* mummy bag for a top quilt. I'm planning on figuring out some sort of system to modularly add insulation to the pluq to get me down to 20 degrees. I'm a pretty warm sleeper, and from some things I've read, I think I'll be able to do it. I also made a bug sock and a DIY Hex tarp with my first sewing experience.
I've only done one night out in the setup so far, and that went pretty well - of course that was on a June night. It's supposed to be fairly cool tonight, so maybe I'll try it out. I'm going up to the Superior Hiking Trail in August with a couple buddies so I can test out the gear in a real scenario (and also an excuse to unplug and get into the woods). Anyways, I wanted to say thanks to everyone for the great info and helpful advice.
