OK I think I want to get a top quilt

But sadly I don't know what rating will best serve me. What I mean is I camp so far mostly through out the late spring to early fall (MA, NH). so the temps don't drop below 40 for the most part.

But, I want to try the later fall and maybe winter hangs. I want a quilt that I can use for most of this. If it's too warm I figure I can always vent to cool of.

Also don't know what size I need. I have broad shoulders and I'm a heavy weight (300+).

    How tall are you?

I'm 6'1", ~180 and like Long quilts. In Enlightened Equipment models I like the Long / Wide because I toss 'n turn.

Sounds like you would benefit from a 30 deg quilt and add layers if needed.

Underground Quilts 20° Flight Jacket with all the overstuff you can get. They'll do custom sizing too if you need it. Paul and Missy are great to work with.
    Good luck,

I've ended up using my JRB Sierra Sniveller most of the year round, we didn't really get a winter last time round. When it's cold enough I have my HG 0* TQ & UQ standing by.

Decide whether or not you want your top quilt to be a hammock only piece of gear or will you use it on the ground too. Ground quilts need to be much wider than hammock quilts (especially if you sleep on an inflstsble ground pad). A hammock (and its underquilt) wraps up around you and sort of meets the top quilt half way.
