Thanks for the info Randy!
I've just been able to do some "DIY" testing with a
Mayan style hammock. Knot-to-knot is is really long,
15 ft, but the fabric is only 9x6 ft. So just to
expirement I tied it of at various lengths to see
what happens (hanged it with a decent amount of sag):
9": I'm getting squeezed, not comfy, hard on the knees,
so all regular types of those length are out of the
equation.
10": already more comfy, but still not relaxed as there
seems to be quite some tension on my legs just pushing out
(hanging my feet over the side does help)
11" yes this is probably more like it, I can lay pretty
comfy although I haven't tried for hours on end.
Even wider would be better.
I suspect an asym style hammock will help somewhat even
at 10", but I'm guessing it should be wider, or I can see
from the pictures here on the forum a bridge type might be
something to look into as well but I prefer diagonal
I think.
I would like to use a hammock for camping so the lighter
the better but it has to be comfortable. Despite my poor
DIY skills it might be worth a shot just to get some
further ideas...
Great forum with lots of info, been reading for a couple
of days now!
General rule of thumb... If it is strong enough that it don't drop you on your butt it is a wonderfully made DIY project. I dare say the even warbonnetguy and Brian of OES went through a stage where they would not have willingly shown their stitching to anybody else. It's called "biggus whoopus". The only way your DIY chops are going to get stronger is by using them. In any event.... you've been bit now... there is no turning back.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Well said, Rev.
.. truly to enjoy bodily warmth, some small part of you must be cold, for there is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself. If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, and have been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more. - Herman Melville
That would probably be a good idea....
Just as a test last night, I added some styrofoam blocks onto the bottom of my feet about 3 inches thick, climbed in, put my feet in the footbox, and got an idea of what someone would feel like... I found my face was right up against the zipper if I layed on the left side, and right up against the fabric on the right side.
Laying on the back I was comfortable, but I felt like I was slightly uphill... not flat as usual.
Randy
cool, thanks for the testing
Thans again Randy, bit of a shame though a blackbird seems so nice
No problem Brandon and Hugo.... Glad to help out!
