    Started starting today

I tried to start making a hammock today and can't get the machine to act right - not surprising since I have never sewn before and my wife professes not to know how to either. I'm using a machine given to my daughter for Christmas two years ago.

However, I can't get it to work. It keeps "eating" my fabric. I've got a call in to my mom(should be a fun converstation) for some trouble shooting, but right now I'm just trying to get my heart rate below 100 again. I've built my own boat, surely I can accomplish this.

Was going to post a picture of me happily stitching away on my first project, but "happily" isn't in my vocabulary right this minute. I'll have to post after I get this taken care of.

    Good Day.

RamblinRev has produced several videos on tips and tricks on using a thread injector. Check them out in the DIY Video Library thread. You can also look them up in the Video links. It may be that you aren't supplying enough tension on the fabric as you sew, or that the bobbin is getting stuck, or that the thread tension is off. You are better off watching the videos than listening to me though.

If the machine has been sitting unused for an extended period of time, it may need a tuneup. Thin, light materials are more sensitive than cotton or heavier polyesters. You also need a new, fine needle for each project and some non-cotton thread, if you haven't got that already.

Then get a lesson from mom in getting everything set up right and tensioned... and I bet it will be much smoother from there.

Just back from JoAnne's. It was the thread. It was too thick. Picked up some Gutterman's and it's working great. I've done 6 yards of really crooked stitching already.

Here you go. My first time ever sewing . . . er making gear . . . was my first hammock. My son says it looks professional. Can't hang out in it myself yet as I don't have any appropriate rope. Picking some up Saturday morning.

Is that a real baby? (it's good to start them hanging early) <j/k>
BTW, I love your floor! I getting ready to start refinishing about 2000 sq ft of hardwood floors...1 room at a time!
