    INFO Lake Jocassee/Laurel Fork

Planning kayak trip on Lake Jocassee. Wanting to stay at Laurel Fork. I have stayed on top of falls. Wanting to know if campsites exist down by lake at boat access. Any info would be helpful. Thanks BigRed77

Try sending a PM to FireInMyBones. I know that he has posted a trip report or two from that area.

I was just there a few weeks back. Check out my report here (https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...Hike-June-2014).

Anyway, there is a single site along the spur trail from the lake up to the FHT, but it is small and sandwiched into a curve in the trail without a lot of privacy. You could probably fit 2-3 backpacking tents/hammocks. If you turn left onto the FHT (towards Toxaway), there are no designated campsites for a while. If you go right, it's 0.6 miles to the spur to the sites above the falls. If you keep going, there are other designated campsites 0.6, and 2.7 miles past that spur. I think I remember seeing a few other sites in between that must not have been designated. The site 2.7 miles up is just shy of Virginia Hawkins Falls and is the nicest. The trail is a very easy uphill the whole way.

I don't know if this is an option for you, but there is a cluster of great campsites north of there where Toxaway Creek dumps into Lake Jocassee. There is also a nice campsite where Rock Creek dumps into the lake that would be even closer than Toxaway. I'm not sure how far by paddle that would be, but I'm sure it would be easier than it was hiking over Heartbreak Ridge and the climb up from Rock Creek!
"The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
    Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

That's what I would have said. The trees at the side trail site are nice for hanging.

The falls that dump into Jocasee is such a legit spot. The falls are right behind my setup in this picture.

Having that cool breeze and hearing that waterfall, man it puts you to sleep so quite.

    It's probably my favorite spot.
