Yep. Camp nano 23 climbing rated biner
Or Eldridge makes a smaller lighter one. Biners are also convenient for hanging packs and gear.

50cal and 30-06 shell casings also make a decent toggle if you're not concerned about whoopies slipping off the knot.

My setup is the same as everyone eles's...put the tree straps up, make a MSH, but then instead of inserting a regular toggle, I clip a climbing rated carabiner into the MSH in place of the toggle. Cinch it down just like you would on a toggle...and then just clip the whoopie sling onto the 'biner.

I've gently touched down twice where the whoopie sling had slipped up over the knot onto the toggle, and I failed to double check it before I got into the hammock.

No risk of that happening, and frankly the weight of a couple of 'biners vs. a couple of toggles is neglible. And having a couple of climbing rated biners on hand in case of an emergency is never a bad idea.

I'm not sure why more people don't do this, to tell you the truth.

+1 on the scrap arrow shafts, aluminum or carbon fiber. The owner of my local shop was more than happy to give a bag full, enough to last 5 lifetimes. i will say that if you use a carbon fiber one , make sure the straps are spread open on the toggle and not twisted. i had one cf toggle crack because the middle strap on the toggle was twisted and was unable to spread the compressing force, instead focusing it on a small area. i did not hit the ground but when i stood up, i noticed it was bent and cracking, yet still would hold my weight. just takes a little paying attention. the cf toggles weigh nearly nothing though!
