    does needle size matter?

Well first off, I never thought I'd be excited that I figured out how to thread a bobbin and a thread injector:-)

Any who, I have some 1.8 rip stop coming in soon, borrowed my buddys wife's injector ( no instructions) just wondering if needle size makes a difference and do I need the correct size thread to go with the needle?

    Thanks

Number 12 sharp point needle works well. The thread should not be too big for the needle otherwise you'll have problems. Gutterman's sew all polyester thread will work fine.

Your welcome. I'm not an expert but it's what I've used and what I've read others have recommended. I've also seen some recommend a size 11 needle. Make sure to use a fresh needle for every project. The Guttermann's Mara 70 polyester thread available here is recommended by many. I don't have a local source for it so I just use the Guttermann's Sew All at my local store.

It depends on how OCD you are. In actuality as long as you are using standard sewing thread of good quality any easily available needle will function. Some folks get all techie over matching the thread size with the needle size but I have never found it worth the effort. I use what ever I happen to have. If it's a one shot deal use what you got. If you are going to go the DIY route with a vengeance then figure out what you like to work with the best and stock up on that.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

"Bless you child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the needle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way."

Make sure you put the needle in correctly..
I was able to use my machine with good success with some materials - cottons mainly, but when I tried to use Nylon, I was missing stitches most of the time.. Turned out my needle was backwards! The design prevents it from going in sideways, but it will go in backwards.. On my machine, the flat side of the needle should face back. No more issues since I figured this out!
