    What products have Permethrin?

What products have Permethrin in them?

I have read here on the forums that Permethrin is safe to spray on your hammocks (safe as in won't "hurt" them like Deet).

When I google it all I come up with is the chemical make up and not what products contain it.

Anyone have brand names that they use to spray their hammocks?

    Thanks
    John

I have used both Sawyer's and Repel's (Permone). The later can be found at Walmart. I've been using Permethrin for going on 3 years now and have experienced no problems with it damaging any materials. I put it on dang near everything; all clothing, hammocks, quilts, pack, boots, etc. Good stuff!

Repel Permanone - Available in spray form at WalMart (camping section)

Sawyer Permethrin - Available in various forms at many sporting goods outlets (REI, Gander Mountain, etc).

I was reading a few threads on permethrin. It appears that the Repel stuff doesn't last as long as Sawyer. Is this everyone else's findings as well?

I'm not sure how that you could tell, aside from objective observation.

Because of the stated duration of coverage and the cost comparision between them, I've always just used the Sawyer brand.

Yeah, nothing scientific about it that's for sure!

However, while roaming up the east coast I found it difficult to find the Sawyer Brand. The Repel stuff was readily available. In the past, using Sawyer, I would only need to retreat every 5 or 6 weeks. I knew I needed to retreat when I watched insects crawling over my stuff (specifically my pack) for any kind of a prolonged period. Well treated stuff doesn't allow them to stay on the gear for long before dropping off dead. The Sawyer treatments tend to last about six weeks pretty consistently. The Repel stuff was loosing its punch after about 3 and needed retreating by the 4th week.

It may be that soaking lasts longer than spraying... not sure one brand lasts longer than the other.

By the way, in case you don't already know - Permethrin is for clothing and fabric items only, not your skin, and don't use it anywhere near your pets until it's dried in the fabric. Specially if you keep fish, cats or frogs.

I coated my Hammock Bliss yesterday with the Repel Permanone and let it dry about five hours and then about dark when the mosquitos usually tear me up,I layed down in the Hammock. The skeeters stayed away.Seems to work......Hmmm I did have a strong urge to listen to Pink Floyd after I got out of the Hammock.

Repel stopped working on my pack and clothing about 2-3 weeks after being applied.
