    NY section of AT

Is this hammockable? I've never been hiking on that side of the state, much less the AT. I'm going with a group of guys and need to know if the hammock is going or if I'm going to need to take my tent instead.

    Thanks in advance!

I hiked from Vernon, NJ to the Hudson River at Bear Mountain in NY last month. I hammocked just fine every night I was in the woods. Here are the photos--

P.S. The NY section is much more difficult than the profile map might otherwise lead one to believe.

Yeah, this section is much friendlier on your hammock than it is on your knees.
It is a very alert, active sheep, with a stylish, lively carriage.

I use a Juki & Pfaffs w/ assorted attachments, and have serviced lots of vintage machines. Any questions?

I didn't have any problem when I did the whole state a couple of years ago. Have fun.

Thanks for all the input. And thanks for the heads up about the terrain - are the rocks and roots as bad as I hear, too?

Not sure what you've heard. There are rocks and roots, yes, but not nearly so bad as stretches of PA nor large portions of NH.

However, there are just a lot of little climbs and descents (most in the 10-to-25' range) that require hand-over-hand work. Really slowed down my pace. Agony Grind was the longest steep one; I think a 600' descent over perhaps half a mile or so. Some involved actual danger of injury. One had a metal extension ladder. I would not have guessed from looking at profile maps. Gratefully, I was warned what to expect.

Good to know. Yeah, PA can be tough, although this year it's been more of an issue with wetlands and giant mud puddles for me down that way.
