Dale Gribble: I'm thinking, "new hammock." For me, laying and swaying in a hammock is like a steady morphine drip without the risk of renal failure.
Randy : yea but just remember yer roots and where ya come from....you got Hennessy in yer blood son......
$57 http://www.rei.com/product/842320/ou...ts-coated-tarp, for a few dollars more a several ounces less you could order a tadpole from Wilderness Logics, or an Edge from Warbonnet to name a few.
Give me more darkness said the blind man,
Give me more folly said the fool,
Give me stone silence said the deaf man,
I didn't believe Sunday School.

You can get a cheap blue tarp at Walmart or Harbor Freight. They work, but are heavy. If you are car camping, the weight doesn't matter. If you are back packing, then you already know the answer...
Cheap, light, long-lasting - pick any two.

This is tarp is under 35. It is small. If hung asym it just barely has enough coverage for an ENO SN. It if fine for fair weather, but I have not really tested it in much of anything. Other than the questionable size, it is a decent piece of gear for the cost. Might be worth a try if money is an issue. I know others have modded it to make it more versatile but I can't remember where I saw that.
I also picked up a dryfly at geartrade.com for 50. It's not a bad site to keep an eye on for used gear at good discounts.
I have been using a guide gear 8.5 square tarp and a three season shelter for a few years. It's relatively light and pretty cheap. I added a ridgeline and it needed to have seam sealer applied. Over all satisfied for the $25 I spent on it.
I'd quote a certain book, but that is not allowed.
If you can find one, the Chinook 12x9.5 tarp is a good value. It has cat cut edges on all sides and made of a PU coated ripstop polyester. It will stretch little when it gets wet compared to a nylon tarp.
The Kelty Noah tarps (the 9 and 12) also get a fair amount of mention in the value tarp category.
Just remember that you tarp is your shelter in your hammock system, so if you are in the hammock camping game for the long run, it will pay to get a quality tarp.
Good judgment comes from experience, and often experience comes from bad judgment. - Unknown
You might also want to look into tent footprints. They will be a bit heavier than silnylon tarps and they might not pitch as perfectly tight as some of the cat-cut tarps you see. But you can occasionally find them at very steep discounts after the tent has been put on clearance.
I found a footprint for a 6-person Kelty tent for $23 on amazon, and it has worked well for my needs. Might be a good option if you are OK with the tradeoffs.
Walmart has a backpacking tarp that it 5x7 but if you sew them together you will double the size.
