Noob question about star gazing and morning dew

I started sleeping in a hammock so I could see the stars all night. I never use a tarp unless it's raining. There aren't any HF threads about this unless they're hiding from me. Do other folks love the night sky, too: the shooting stars, the constellations wheeling over, the New Moon dark of night? If so, what do you do about dew? New Moon in June, my whole set-up got drenched on the outside. Do you tarp halfway? Does mosquito netting keep dew off the top quilt?

Love the stars, hate the morning dew. I also hate getting out of my hammock after I get in, so I give up the stars and rig the tarp.

Spent a Week-end out in the desert, with a tri-pod stand hammock set up. Keep me above the Rattle snakes. The night sky was BLACK no glow from any cities. Used my Iphone, with the Night sky ap, to view the bright stars and just gazing up.

Here is a good link for Star gazing. It's professional grade Interactive. Linky: http://www.stellarium.org/

For the Morning Dew, like it was mentioned.. Tarp, will help allot. Plus, it keeps bugs from falling on yea during the night. OR Like in once case a bird from Scat bombing, yea in the eye.

Check out the Cuben fiber tarps. Fairly translucent. Might be a good compromise.

There are things like the lazy slug or the clear shower curtain tarp both would suit your purpose.

Yes, very much enjoy looking up. When bugs allow, I run without a net.

Went without a tarp this weekend and the full moon was so ridiculously bright I had to cover my eyes to sleep.

Dew will happen but most of it burns off with the morning sun so just leave the stuff hanging.

If it bothers you, an underquilt protector will help keep the dew off the underquilt and a similar piece of fabric over the top quilt will do the same. Perhaps something made out of Argon 67 as a top quilt protector or dew cover. Would be superlight and provide the surface required.

Set up the tarp in a lean to type configuration or hang close to the edge of a porch type configuration. It will maximize your view out at least one side and keep the dew off. The other option is to raise the height of the tarp to maximize the view around you. In order to get protection from the dew though you will have to have some cover directly over top of you. Most of the time I just go without and let it dry before I pack it up. Looking up at the stars at night is one of the reasons I camp in the first place so I can put up with with some dew.
I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.
