Does silnylon ever become not water proof?

Title pretty much says it all.
    Just wondering.
Will it ever degrade and begin to wet out?

    Yes.

And subsequent treatments will never make it "good as new" but it will be waterproof for a while and then you can treat it again.

I have a tarp that has been hanging outside on a daily basis for close to 450 days and is still going strong. I have seam sealed it twice and am applying a coating this week to "freshen" the waterproofing.

You can test silnylon by spraying it with a garden hose and seeing if the water beads off or if the material starts to soak up the water right away.
    Have sherpas, will travel...

I used my Integral Designs sil 8x10 tarp to do the AT in 2001 and I've used it ever since. I'm using it this year to do the Colorado Trail. I definitely have a tarp on back up for the CT and I'll probably retire it after I'm done hiking the CT. It's still water proof.

After replying to the thread, I went and held each tarp in my hand. My old tarp is definitely less slick and seems like the silicon may be kinda beading off... Not really super noticeable at first, but there is definitely a difference in the feel of each tarp. The new one (Borah Gear) might be going on the CT.... hmm ☺
