What hammock do you take for your AT thru-hike?

I just read that "You will wear out almost all gear items that you take on a thru-hike. If you have an expensive piece of gear that you really like, you may want to consider leaving it home, and buying something less expensive to take in its place."

I'm curious: What have those who have thru-hiked or even section-hiked the AT taken along for the ride?!? Do you take your favorite hammock or settle with a lesser friend?!?

I take my favorite hammock. What would be the purpose of having a favorite hammock if you don't use it, especially on a long hike? If I am going to be gone for a long hike then I want to bring the most comfortable hammock I have (my favorite).

My favorite hammock is an ENO Double. Cheap, super comfortable, and easily replaced as I've seen them in quite a few Outfitters along the AT between VA > PA...

I have to agree with ATTroll wholeheartedly, what's the point of having your favorite most comfortable hammock sitting in your closet while you long distance hiking?

I'm pretty sure that Nest is on his second AT-thruhike with the same hammock...

Phooey to not taking something because it will wear-out. That's crazy talk. I buy my gear with the intention of it wearing-out. BTW, the only things that wore-out on my AT hike were my boots, stoves, and my wallet.

Stoves? (Don't mean to hijack) I'm assuming cannister, not alcohol?

That's one thing the AT taught me, and taught me very well: It will not be the things you plan for that go amuck; it will be the things you are certain nothing will go wrong. Just a fact.

Lost my good canister stove; know right where it was left too.
Three different alcohol stoves died various deaths.
One wood burner got smushed real good in the pack.

5, yes 5 stoves bit the dust between Georgia and Vermont. Still using (sometimes) the stove I left the Trail with; a cheapo MSR PocketRocket. Added bonus is I still really like it!

On my long distance hikes, I've brought all of my favs. There's something to be said for gear that your are familiar with and really like. You trust it and know what the limits are.

To bring something else would be like traveling a long distance with a complete stranger vs. a really great friend!

Besides, sooner or later gear needs replacing. Just replace with the same fav!

Yup, same hammock. No signs of wear or anything either.
