Combo gear sling + chair?

Hey folks,

I have a screwball idea, but before I go trying it, I wanted to run it by forum to see if anyone has been there/done that and has any advice.

I was thinking about commissioning (I have no sewing skills) a gear-sling-sized hammock...maybe 5 foot square or so...out of fabric heavy enough to hold my weight with the thought that I might be able to use it as a chair on the trail.

I keep my main hammock inside my pack liner for rain protection, and was thinking about keeping my gear sling and suspension closer to the top, near my stove, so if I stop to cook dinner a few miles before I stop to pitch camp, I can haul out the sling/chair for something to sit on while I cook/eat.

Any thoughts?

Can't remember who it was, but it's definitely been done before, with great results. He even posted the info on here on how to build it.

Not a screwball idea at all. Some members have made some all in one gear sling/hammock chair/pack cover/water container. I personally carry a second smaller hammock on paddling trips for use as a lounger/chair/gear sling.

Well, while noodle around what I'll do more permanently, I modded my ENO underbelly so I can use it this weekend. Ditched the webbing/cord locks and cordage for some continuous loops I made out of some 400 # test utility cord. Lark's headed some lighter cordage to that with prusiks so I can use it as a normal gear sling. Now I can attach my whoopies directly to the continuous loops and sit comfortably.

Later I will want to swap it out for something lighter and/or with more uses, but this will definitely do the trick for the moment.
