Too heavy to weigh on any of my scales but I would guess it is in the 60-75 lb. range. It is easily assembled and disassembled though. I bought all the pipes/connectors at Lowes for $110.00 plus tax. Home Depot was cheaper but the one local to me didn't have all the parts so I spent a few extra bucks so I could get everything in one stop at Lowes.

The turtle dog stand I made includes
    • six 2" x 2" x 6.5'
    • 2 chain link top rail pieces 6' each. Home Depot sells these as 10'6" with several inches of one end smaller to fit inside the end of the next rail. You can cut to 5'3" each for portability.
    • 2 heavy duty T hinges
    • twelve 2" x 1/4" bolts, nuts, washers
    • 2 "S" hooks
    • two 3/8" x 2" eyebolts with nuts
    • 20' of line, if you want to use spread limiters for the tripod stands

    You'll need:
    • a drill and bits
    • wrenches

Mine weighs about 37#. Look for the really long thread on the DIY section of this forum. (more than 220 pages) The stands have a larger footprint than the stand on Derek Hansen's site. Set-up and take-down take about a minute each.

I have looked at the turtle dog stands, but I am a heavy individual and I don't mind carrying more weight if it give me a better sense of security. I mainly car camp and I would hate to wakeup on the ground because the stand broke. I generally go for overkill in anything I build. I just like how the metal stand looks like I could hang 500 pounds from it. I like overkill.

Yes overkill is good. That is why I drive a diesel truck to tow a bass boat.

If you want overkill and want to hang more than 300 lbs on it, I would consider 1.5" instead of 1". I'm not sure where others put the recommended weights on these, but that would be my cut off. The main issue is that there is no bracing which results in side to side rocking no matter how gingerly you get in and out.

Hey folks! I'm not on HF much, but while responding to a PM I saw this post and thought I'd drop in.

As some have mentioned, using some Duct tape is pretty inexpensive. This is what the Jacks use. Personally, I've never had any slippage problems. I wrap my straps multiple times above and below the standing end before threading through the eye loop. I use this stand frequently at hammock demos.

I disassembled the foot and weighed a 2' section, extrapolated that for the 6' sections, and weighed all the connectors. My stand with 2 extra couplers and 2 nipples weighs in at 58.6 lbs.

Thanks Derek. And thanks for the plans for the stand and all the info you've provided thru your book & website. I'm going to give each method a try with 2 or 3 different hammocks of varying lengths and see what works best for me.

Trail Runner, Does this hammock stand work well with your Bridge? I have a War Bonnet Bridge and I'm looking for a hammock stand that I can take car camping and also use in my back yard. Do you set a tarp up over it as well? If so, how?
    thanks!
