Does anyone know of a company that still sells one?
Does anyone know of a company that still sells one?
Mountain Laurel designs did have spinn asym tarps for sale but I don't think they do anymore. Seeing as waterproof spinn is no longer made, I doubt you will have any luck finding a new one. You may be able to find a used one somewhere though, I've seen a couple come up in the fs section.
Do not know of anyone making them.
Prolite gear still sells the fabric,

you could make yourself one, but at 14.98/yd. its getting close enough to cuben to make you wonder if its worth the trouble. It's also the same approx weight as Dutch's silnylon, unless you need no-stretch may want to consider that route.

The last time I saw a Spinnaker tarp for sale was at least a year ago at www.jacksrbetter.com but it's not listed anymore. I have an old one, a MacCat from Brian at OES but he doesn't make them anymore either. (His business has been stumbling for a while anyway).
Spinnaker is a sail fabric never meant to be waterproof, only windproof. But us campers realized that it was good enough for a lightweight tarp. However, the manufacturing of it changed a few years ago and rendered it not waterproof, making it useless for a tarp. About the same time, Cuben started becoming more available, providing that lightweight, non-stretch solution we were looking for.
I recently made a winter tarp for my son using Sil-Argon from Dutch. It's a lightweight beauty, but being nylon, it will stretch.

He sold out of it a while ago, and hasn't gotten more in yet.
From the Prolite gear site on the spin fabric
- width: ~55 inches ( same width as cuben fabric)
- hydrostatic head: ~2 PSI. ( don't know how this relates to how water proof or not it is )
They are charging $14.98 a yard while most cuben sells for $27+ a yard ( see link below to sites that sell cuben fabric )
If I remember correctly several of the places that use to sell spin tarps stopped selling them because the manufacture(s) change the composition of the fabric and it was not the same quality. Maybe it was no longer water proof. If someone has more information on this please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
