    Recent convert from WNC

My name is Chris and I'm a recent convert from ground dwelling. Back when I was in scouts, I had one of those mesh rope backpacking hammocks that I never considered sleeping in but loved lounging in it. My son is now a scout and basically his whole troop sleeps in hammocks. He got a Yukon Outfitters double off of Woot last year but he hasn't really used it since we couldn't pull the trigger on a tarp (I decided against a Walmart poly tarp after talking with guys in the troop). After several trips, and sleeping on the rock or root I didn't see, I decided I wanted a hammock too. The Yukon hammock looks as good as an ENO to me, so during the last Woot deal I picked up another double hammock for me and 2 tarps. I came here looking for suspension advice, and holy cow, information overload. That being said, we are looking forward to swinging in the breeze in 2014.

Surely, God could have made a better way to sleep.

Hi and welcome from another scouter. Glad your troop is embracing the hammock. Our boys are loving it, but we're constantly getting flak from the Troop Committee -- hopefully, time will ease their concerns.

Sadly, you just missed the annual John Rock hang in your backyard, but there will be lots of opportunities for more. And yeah, it's a lot of info but I'm sure you'll have a blast learning (although your wallet might not! )

Welcome to the forums. I had that same hammock as a Scout. I am now mostly using DIY stuff with one underquilt purchased (gift) and an underquilt shell purchased. I am now a scoutmaster and we have a few boys taking to the trees. Check out this trip report.

    Welcome to the forums.
Nothing like hard rocks/roots under your shoulders to motivate you into hammocks.
