National Geographic will be running a "survival" series starting in September.
In the meantime NG has a website being updated daily with gps tracking and videos as the series is shot. It looks like Ed, the solo subject of the series, has wisely chosen to sleep in a hammock instead of a tent.

I like to see Ed's gearlist. Mainly because I'm kind of a nerd.
I would have to be in danger of starving to death before I'd eat a porcupine, but the procedure I'd use would be:
1. very carefully remove the innards.
2. sharpen a stick and pith it.
3. burn the spines off in the fire
4. finish cleaning it.
5. finish cooking it.
6. choke it down and try to keep it down.
On the website they show a pic of him in his hammock: "Ed finds a place to setup his TENT.." They just called a hammock a tent...
Yeah, I noticed that too. I guess the web people don't actually watch the video. Or dont' know the difference.

I was able to catch the "pre" trip on tv. This guy is very very scared of bears!!!! I was also surprised that he didn't take at least some kind of dehydrated food with him, like instant potatoes or rice to go with all this meat that's he's gonna be killing. Living off of just meat for 3 months.... how about at least some salt and pepper!!!
I did check out the link but I think I'll wait for the program to air on tv. I also wasn't to crazy about his lean-to that he made by chopping down the trees. Looks like he's using straps to hang the hammock but he then chops all the bushes around it.
I thought it was odd how he broke down on day 3!
Looked very much like a Claytor Jungle hammock to me, with the original straps. It's also a possibility it had never been used as the ends weren't gathered. Should be a fun show to watch.

Any one recognize that hammock? It has a channel like a Claytor. But it almost- kind of/maybe- looks like the left and right side is attached separately to the trees, leaving the gathered end wider than usual, almost like a Bridge, except no spreader bars. I don't really think that is it, but it sort of looks that way in the limited detail you can see. Wonder how he kept his back side warm?
