MA > Hammocks in MA State Parks

Just a FYI. In response to my question of whether hammocks are allowed in Massachusetts State Campgrounds (MA Division of Conservation and Recreation), I received the following information on July 27th..... "They have been getting more requests for hammock camping as time goes on. Hammock camping is allowed at DCR campgrounds – where there are trees of course. That leaves out Salisbury, Horseneck and Scusset Beach State Reservations, possibly one or two others. *If you have any further questions for DCR about camping with hammocks, feel free to contact Anita Wysocki, DCR’s Campground Coordinator at 617-626-1470."

Since I retired, some times I stay awake all day, some times all night.

I just recently used my hammock at D.A.R. State Park in Goshen, MA. No problems at all.

The past three NEHHA hangs have been in MA. They were aware we were hammockers. Just had a pretty big hang at Harold Parker state forrest. They told us there that we were required to use tree straps. We had a small hang at the DAR this past winter. I've hung there multiple times and never really see any park rangers around to notice we're in hammocks.

I am blown away, the Communist Republic of MA is going to allow Hammocks?

Lol. You sound like my old man making fun of this state! He calls it the "people's Republic of MA" and taxachusetts! He thinks we're a bunch of Commy massholes. I like where I live in MA, though, I did have culture shock when I moved up here from the south.

I wouldn't think MA would really have a problem with hammocks, we are environmentalists but I've never heard reports of tree damage using straps. I could understand them being prohibited in conservation areas, but even tent camping is against the rules in a lot of those areas.

Actually I'm more surprised that Massachusetts doesn't tax your hammock! Lol

Literally in my backyard. Have yet to hang overnight there though.

using hammocks for camping seems like one of those common sense - no brainer - this is way better for everything kinda things.
I dunno I don't normally think this way but I feel like if people keep asking to do something that is so obviously the right and ok thing to do, then someone with too much free time at their state job might want to look in to and create some rules around this whole hammock thing, then we are doomed!

As far as scusset beach and horseneck beach are concerned you could always use a stand, no trees required.
...Tell me no lies, make me a happy man ...

Funny I camped Myles a bunch as a scout. I grew up in Attleboro, and am glad I live as far away as I can and still be in the US now. That said I miss the New England beaches, Chowda, stuffies, and and a good fish and chips.
