Tree, you call that a tree; this is a tree

Many times when I post or read a post there is an assumption on the part of the person replying about what kinds of trees a person is dealing with. When I watch all those hammock YouTube videos, especially those made east of Colorado, they all show these sticks they call "trees" with flat cleared ground between. Also, when I talk about kayaking and "beach front" property, I still get comments that imply I should have plenty of tree options.

So here are some photos of what we in the NW mean by a tree. You can see that 8 ft of camo webbing for a whoopie sling isn't quite enough. And though there is greenery behind the beach - it's a bit dense and inhabited by wolfs. This is what I mean by "tree" and also what I mean when I say there may not be trees when I talk about alternatives (like Hammock as a Bivi Bag). Also, the last photo shows why a GPS is useful when on the water rather than walking a trail.

The trees I hang on are generally the size of my thigh. Those trees are beautiful.

I still would love to see a video of someone putting 25' - 50' treestraps on to review hammock or hardware.

Seriously, this is a beautiful set of pics. Just love those giants. You can probably latch a pole to the tree and hang from the pole. Thinking of the TDS, the tree is large enough to act like both sets of tripods.

Thanks for sharing your perspective of "no trees". It goes to show there is more than one meaning to many of our sayings here.

Nice photos thanks for sharing. I enjoy big ancient trees as well, there are even some live oak, bald cypress and other species in Texas that are several hundred years old. Also some in the Amazon rain forest were I an originally from that were even more impressive. However, several things I noticed about these and all the other forests with large ancient trees around the world: Very close to them are smaller trees that are much easier to hang from and if a branch falls from them it is less likely to injure me. Also lightning is less likely to strike the shorter trees, this is clearly evident but the lack of blow off tops and split off bark wounds running down their sides. Of the approximately 25 million surface lightning strikes in the USA every year (that the NWS records) many hit tall trees. And people using metal tent poles out on open beaches when a perfectly good forest was just behind them. What was it that Forrest Gump said when people called him retarded he said ...

The beach is on the northern side of Vargas Island, north of Tofino on the west side of Vancouver Island BC. The trees were in a roadside park we passed on the way to Tofino, Cathedral Grove, on Hwy 4 a bit east of Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. We have big Ponderosa Pine around Central Oregon. However, because we are "High Desert" in Bend, the open spaces often have scrawny Juniper. But I definitely carry 12 - 15 ft straps.

Yeah, we have some trees like that in Tasmania. Where there are trees that are a nice size, the undergrowth is so thick that you can't get between the trees!

Lack of trees has never been a problem for me. Lack of trees that I can actually hang between is the problem!
