    Shenandoah National Park...suggestions needed

Hi....I did my first backpacking/hanging on the Rip Rap loop. Any one have suggestions for 3 day trip? I'm planning for the fall and would like to find a hike that you've enjoyed and why you would recommend it. Marys Rock, Pass Mountain and Hazel Mountain looks interesting on paper....
    Thanks for any info....

What exactly are you looking for in the hike? Views, waterfalls, fishing, solitude, edibles, history, rock climbing ??? There are so many options give me an idea of what you looking for and I can point you in the right direction.

HI krshome... solitude and vistas..... Also, I had a problem locating sites to hang. I found a couple of sites but trees weren't the best for hanging. I'm sure I'll get better locating sites as I gain experience. Also, I wonder if it will be easier with less foilage in the fall/winter months...
    Thanks for the help.

I just got back from an at yo yo from elkwallow to big meadows. I, too, have had trouble finding good hanging spots. So much underbrush, dense growths, too steep slopes, and tons and tons of standing dead trees. It is only a one night trip, but perhaps, could be added to another leg, but I really enjoyed Jeremy's run and neighbor mountain.

I did my first hang out at Jeremy's Run. The loop with neighbor mountain isn't very long. But the hike up the run is nice especially in the spring. Lots of water and less foliage. Just bring insulation or you'll catch cold butt like I did, gets pretty chilly down in the ravine at night if you hang down by the stream.

Tnx gnomad and wildwoodwb...I'll get my SNP map out and locate Jeremy's Run and surrounding area. Sounds like something worth checking!

Did Old Rag with a pack, painful but rewarding. Lots of people though. There's a great camp spot where the Saddle Trail meets the Berry Hollow Fire Road - if you on the Saddle Trail, turn left off trail about 20 yards from the fire road. Lots of tall trees, good soil and virtually no underbrush save some moss and grass. There's even a small stream if you keep walking in that direction, although it was a bit dry and nasty last time I was there a month ago.

There's also some spots at the top of the Corbin Mountain Trail, although they are dry camps. We hiked up the Indian Run Trail (absolutely deserted, and lots of bear scat if you want a chance to see some furry tractors) and kept looking for someplace to set up. We finally decided just to pack it in and walk an extra couple of miles back to the car instead of camping another night. But, right as we were about to pass out of the dispersed camping area, there was a great site right near the trail. Would be good if you got there late at night and just wanted a place to set down.

I hiked the SNP last summer and we did the Jeremy Run and other trails around that area including the Pass Mountain hut area... which was great...would highly recommend it. I would also encourage you to get the phone app PATC Shenandoah. It shows all the trails and give you GPS mark on where you are in the Park... which was really helpful and informative and worth the price.

Great suggestions...now that it's sorta cooling off, I'm really looking forward to getting back out to the SNP. Still a novice, but as a solo, should I be concerned about bears in the fall/winter? Never gave it a thought when I did my first solo a few months ago...
