Quick comments on WBBB vs GTUL

I've been using my WBBB for over 2 years now. I also had a Grand Trunk UL for several years, only using it as a chair and to relax - never for sleeping.

Recently, I decided to hang the GTUL in my basement just for fun. Over the past month or so, I would just relax in it for a few minutes here and there. After I took a nap in it the other day for about 2hrs, my legs were asleep and one knee hurt.

Last night, I hung the WBBB again and the difference was night and day! Much more comfortable and enjoyable. I don't think this comes as a surprise to anyone, but I really forgot how much I like my WBBB.

But at the size of a softball packed, the GTUL is still a nice hammock especially considering the price.

I found that a large biner through the channel and suspension hooked through it widened the ends of mine enough to simulate a longer hammock and significantly improved the comfort.

There was a fairly extensive thread on mini-spreader bars that is a good read if you want to see how this works.

I've slept for up to 6 nights in a row in my GTUL without any problems at all. I find it to be very comfortable. But then again, I'm a smaller guy at 5'6" and weighing in at 155lbs. YMMV, I guess.
    - We're never going to survive this!!
    - Nonsense. You only say that because no one ever has.

I seem to fit well at 5'9", but there's something from keeping me 100% comfortable.

The height of the hanger in question can play a lot into it. Being only 5' 6" myself, I can get diagonal and comfortable in just about any hammock. I have an ENO DN, DIY and WBBB and can stretch out and find the sweet spot in all of them. They all have their own advantages and disadvantages, but in the end, they're all comfy

    Thank You!

I thought this was another of the endless mass produced BB offerings vs top notch cottage vended product, threads

GTUL was my first sling. It is now my neice's problem. She loves it though. Uses it as a chair, or at least that's the story.

One of the keys to going Ultra Light for long distance backpacking is finding the correct balance of gear that suits you uniquely. DIY with just the right fabric weight and size perhaps or using an off the shelf effectively. The "mini-spreader bar" concept is basically from Captain Cook's ships in the 1700's as they adapted the natives gathered end hammocks for the tighter spaces of a small wooden ship. It may waste a lot of time, but you can always use your bush knife to baton a spreader bar out of local wood at each camp site when you are traveling ultra light. I.e. a large 2" diameter greenish branch or sapling can be cut with a fairly small knife using the correct technique in not too much time and a notch put on each end. Semi precision baton work.
