    HH clone in progress

I got partway through making a HH clone based on Headchange's instructions last night. I started with 3 yards of chocolate brown DWR from Ed Speer. The 9' length is a little too small for me (at 6'0), but I'm thinking I'll give this first attempt to my nephew for a late birthday present.

I hemmed the edges, made my "tube", made my "loop thingys" and rolled and whipped (zip tie). At first I used the 5 rolls per side, but it seemed to be a little tight when I got in, so I went back and went with 4. My loop thingy's are a little too long as well (easy to shorten, harder to lengthen).

My plan now is to sew some of Ed's velcro to the sides for bug netting, then sew the other side on the netting and viola! I'm hoping the velcro won't be too difficult to sew, and that it'll hold well enough and give the top part of the hammock some shape, and not be a general PIA.

I'm using the ring buckle suspension method as well.

It's pretty comfortable, I actually fell asleep in it for a little while last night, it's just a little too small for me. My next version will be for my brother-in-law and will be about 10' long.

    Patrick,

I'm planning on an HH clone like HC's as well, so I can't wait to see how yours comes out done to his specs. Keep us posted!

    Thanks Hooch.
It's nice to have all of the directions and pictures to follow online.

We'll see how the velcro goes. I figure the next hammock version will be nicer, and maybe have a #5 zipper for the bugnetting instead. Since I already have the velcro in the house, I'll use it on this hammock.

It took me awhile to get it right for me. I ended up liking the fabric 10' long, rolls only 3/4"-1" wide (lots of rolls per half), a 10' ridgeline, and tieouts of about 6". Basically a tight straight hang. Feels good to me. I also did not sew the ends forming a tube.

Sewing the end is, IMO, how to keep the edges a bit more taut. It doesn't seem to work all that well though. Not sure if I would even bother the next time. However, it will give you a better bug barrier.

Is that because you are using your new bug-bivvy with yours instead?

It was more b/c I could not get the feel right with it. I knew I was not going to attach a bugnetting, so I was not worried about keeping it. I also did not put the ridgeline the ends.

I basically used the HH gathering method crossed with the standard folding method, with the folding method way of attaching it to the hammock.

When I folded it, I folded each half seperatly and then folded the 2 halves in. Than I pulled the edges out a couple inches to pull up the slack on the sides. That worked for me.

Makes sense to me. I may try a few different folding methods next time.

It took me awhile to get it right for me. In the end thought this way feels better to me than anything else I have tried.

The roll whip is very tricky but in the end worth the effort. I would like to know how HH does it.

I can't wait to see some pics of the finished product Patrick.

BTW Patrick my hammock is 10' long made from the dimension of the HH ULBA which is 120"x60". I'm about 5'10" and there is plenty of extra length.
