I've hung at Blue Mounds and Governor Dodge State Parks and had good results at both. But I didn't get the primitive/wilderness camp experience I personally like to go for. Black River State Forest (more like central west WI) has some good primitive camping, and Kettle Moraine in the east is from what I hear also good. Not many choices for us until we go further north it seems!
Agreed.. Not a lot of choices.. Hanging, yeah, but hiking?? I was just thinking about maybe along the ATV trails or maybe the bike paths?? I know there's plenty of spots one could hike and then stealth camp along the Sugar River Trail between Monroe and New Glarus.. The ATV trails (rail bed) would be similar.. And speaking of rail bed, the rail system is a thought and if I'm not mistaken, the trains in Green/Rock/Lafayette counties only run once a day or so.. Again, it'd require stealth camping..

Ya....Ive been to Blue Mounds and Gov State Park...not great. Neither is Kettle Moraine (at least the spots ive been....its pretty huge).
Awesome mountain biking on the south end though....but that's a different story.
Ill have to check out Black River.
Up north is great....and the Yoop is incredible.
Where u at paper? im on the line just outside of Richmond.
I'm west of you, on the line between Rockford and Beloit.
I was working in Escanaba this week and stopped at one of my favorite little camping spots, Fox Park. It's a small township park right on Lake Michigan, between Cedar River and Escanaba. Nothing special, but just a nice place to stop and plenty of places to hang next to the lake. The UP is loaded with great spots.

Not really southern WI but the North Country Trail around Drummond is real nice. You can hang anywhere along the trail.

Whooooo Buddy)))) All Secure in Sector Seven
I'm more of a day lounger/car camper I haven't ever really tried any backpacking or primitive camping. However I have enjoyed camping at Mirror Lake State Park then driving 15 min down the road to Devil's Lake State Park and day hiking there. Definitely not hardcore or isolated but still fun.
Thnx JK and Shug...
Devils lake is usually crazy crowded....but it is easily accessible.
Sounds like a trip to North County trail is in order.
If you are looking for company I am looking to explore that area. I frequently at
either milwaukee or 240miles north in sugar camp wi. My girlfriend and friends are not backpackers. The iceage trail about a hour south of me (when i am up north) also has a large portion where you can camp anywhere, near Antigo. And really to the west there are 100s of wilderness campgrounds.
