Top vs. Bottom Insulation

Im thinking that when i do some testing when my yeti comes in, i will use my thermarest for the feet. On top i have a big agnes pitch pine thats only 16 oz, good FOR ME down to about 30F. Im a warm sleeper for sure though. I carry an emergency blanket that came in my car emergency kit, one of those space blankets, if it gets too cold i just use that, but i hope to replace my ba soon. hopefully with something that works for me, im leaning towards nunataks or jrbs.

My first experience with a hammock was inside the house with the thermostat set to 80F. Even then, I immediately noticed my underside getting cold due to the air movement underneath the hammock. Once I put some small amount of insulation beneath me, I was fine. Sooooooooo, I vote that UQ is #1 priority and TQ is #2.

Is it wrong that whenever I see a picture of the Nunatak quilts I get a little drool in the corner of my mouth, wish i had the coin to drop on one of those/ Sigh.when I get out of school.....maybe

I agree with Cannibal that typically, I seem to need about 5-10*F more insulation for an UQ vs a TQ (everything being the same)

Where can I find information about making a Climashield top quilt? Purchasing the materials & general patterns?

Mainly two options, which I can do for you cuz I cant fall asleep.

Here's my POV...heat rises, so you need a good UQ. God meant man to have a warm butt, hence mattresses, thermarests, UQ's. On a warm night, our nature is to vent topwise. On a cold night, start with warming the botttom (side) and then work on the top. My sense is that the bottom half represents more of a constant, like keeping a beer stein at least half full. No matter what you do with the top half, if the bottom half is either empty or cold, you ain't drinking or warm. Regulate with the top side. Finally, my sense is more research needs be done with the UQ side of things, and that being done, the top side will be an easy fix.

materials can be had at thruhiker.com
pattern is whatever size you need (length, width)
how to here will get the generals...
you can duplicate the suspension and footbox systems found in the "homemade gear" section of HF
