Steer me in the right direction

Thinking about trying the hammock route.

    6'2" 250 lbs
    Motorcycle Touring and camping
Less than 7 lbs would be good, not hiking with it.
Large Fly, to put my stuff under.
want quality and comfort....price...not an issue.
Resale- if it don't work out... I will sale.

    45 degree to summer camping...

I look at couple of sites, then I register here and man of man at all the options...

BTW, any motorcycle touring folks here to "hang" with?

Welcome Norwood, You will probably get about 20 responses in the first couple of hours and most of them will all say Warbonnet Black Bird. I will just be the first I just got mine couple weeks ago and I love!!! it. Tarp wise there are tones of options OES makes good stuff, hope to order one down the road. Resell would be fast on either from what I have seen on other stuff that has come up for sale, but that is a rare ocasion for sure, just to comfortable.

    Cheers

Lurk and learn.. take a few days to research all your options. Are you a DIY'r? you could build your own. Mosquito net is priceless, so don't skimp on that. Tarps are available from a few diff. sources, 10x 12 is usually good for most people. You can go bigger or add an extra smaller "gear tarp". And yes, there are a few bikers on here, they will chime in soon. Good luck and welcome to the forum. Oh, and kiss your $$$$$$ goodbye.

I've been known to ride and "Hang" when I camp. There are several sites that lean toward bike camping, Here is one:

Thanks all for the information...been reading here a lot and finding more information...about just what I think I may need....
    thus far:

need a double layer to put pad between to keep from fighting it all night
    Straps suspension
bug net a must here in humid south
Tarp: I think I want a large one to put my motorcycle gear under at night.

I think I will be able to sleep on my side in a large one like the WBBB.

Like the snakeskins idea..(without the snakes )

Every read, I finding more interesting idea...
    This is a good forum...

Im a motocamper too and like Groundhog says- Im on motocamper.com as well. Been a hanger before I started riding. a perfect combination. Even though Ive used the original HH for years, I just found this site and it blew my mind. I too have been lurking for a month or so and trying to figure out what I can do to improve what I have. You will find you will get a variety of recommendations that will make your mind spin and wonder where to put your money to get the basics. From what Im getting here- everyone has different preferences as to what kind of hammock, straps, tarps, etc. they like and works for them. Im realizing Im going to have to do what Ive done with my motorcycle gear- buy something and try it. if I dont like it, buy something else and see until you find a combination that works for you. Expensive, yes, but as my wife says, thats what Hobbies are...

    Norwood,

I am a motorcycle tourer and just returned from a circle tour of Lake Superior hammock camping the whole trip.

I lurked here for quite a while and then joined and asked many questions and got a lot of great help.

I went with the Warbonnet BlackBird because of the great reviews, customer service and ability to resale in case I didn't like it.

While in Canada it got down to the 40's at night and I did not have any problems. I have a Cooke Custom Sewing 10' x 10' tarp because I "like you" wanted to be able to put all of my gear under it at night. I am sure you can do the same with an OES and Brian is great at answering questions, but I already had one of Cooke's tarps and it worked out fine.

My next challenge is the pad and sleeping bag. Both of which I already had and both are too big for the bike. I have a Therm-a-rest base camp model that is too wide. I think I am going to try a walmart egg crate model to see how it works. For the sleeping bag I need to find something that is not a mummy bag and is more compressible than my 25 year old Slumberjack.

Here is a gratuitous shot of my bike loaded.

Cooke Custom Sewing makes fantastic gear!! Because it's adapted so well for canoe camping a lot of the ultra-lite folks don't know about it. But I tell ya, it's the greatest quality stuff out there. The good BWCA outfitters all stock some of the CCS gear lines. (Usually packs, tarps and bugnets.)

Full disclosure: I live in the same town, but have no relationship with the owners of CCS!
