AHE is one place that makes top quilts with Climashield Apex (synthetic insulation). You'll have to contact him to see what a -40 top quilt would cost to make.
Molly Mac Gear also recently posted they are making Climashield top quilts. Contacting them.
Most likely your easiest option would be to get a Wiggy's sleeping bag rated to -40. I have a 2 bag Wiggy's system (-40 combined rating) and it works well in deep winter temperatures.
Of course you know that using synthetic insulation for that temperature range isn't going to compress much and will be quite heavy. So using a pulk/toboggan or other means of conveyance will be strongly recommended (unless car camping).

Ya, have the wiggy's Thule,-60 set up already plus a 0*F TQ, -25F UQ. the girlfriend is looking for winter gear and doesn't want to have to pay the price for down. was just checking to see other options.
Check out Tim's offerings on the Prodigy TQ at Enlightened Equipment. You can even select your temp ratings and size.
MichiganDave is right. We do offer synthetic TQ & UQ, however due to the difficulty in sewing uber thick insulation our ratings Max out at 20* so it depends where you live if it'll be enough for your winter. You can layer TQ but it's a lot harder to effectively layer UQ.
